Canio’s Cultural Cafe promotes creativity and community through the literary arts.
We’re an educational not for profit (501c3) hosting lectures, workshops, seminars and more that include a diversity of artists, writers, educators, independent scholars, students, and community members. We value community, creativity, peace, social justice, environmental stewardship and spiritual practices for inspiration and guidance. Over the years, we’ve partnered with many local groups and beloved institutions to offer the community thoughtful literary programming.
Some events we’ve enjoyed:
* Marathon Readings including Emily Dickinson, John Steinbeck, Walt Whitman, and Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.
* Master Writing Workshops on Poetry, Nature, Memoir, and Fiction with renowned writers including Mark Doty, Carl Safina, David Bouchier, and more.
* Writing Workshops with Maryann Calendrille and guest leaders
* Through the Viewfinder: Photography workshops and forums with Kathryn Szoka
* Racial Justice East End: The CCC is a founding member of this group which sponsors public book groups. A selection of recent book discussions includes The New Jim Crow, Becoming Ms. Burton, Just Mercy, Between the World and Me, The Third Reconstruction and The Far Away Brothers.
* Canio’s4Kids: a monthly book read with Ms. Sigrid for children 4 & up
* Community workshops on the Environment created by Northwest Earth Institute. Multi-week workshops with community members
* Eye on the Environment series: lectures and readings focusing on the environment.
* Canio’s Cinema Series: From Oscar winners to Books-to-Film, Irish History & more.
* Sag Harbor’s Thomas Merton Circle events and Spiritual writing workshops
* Master Workshops on Dante’s Divine Comedy
